Thematic Priority Areas

Thematic Priority Areas

The Thematic priority areas are:

1. Energy

Energy supply in Nigeria can be classified two main categories: urban and rural. Urban areas essentially on the grid while rural areas are largely off the grid. Nigeria’s roadmap to power sector essentially focuses on the development of grid-based electricity and the sector reforms only extend the national grid to rural areas which are close to main urban areas, thus leaving the rural areas which constitute over 70% of the population without electricity. This energy poverty and insecurity can be reduced or solved by promoting and providing low carbon energy to these areas thereby promoting “off-grid” electrification. Renewable energy such as sola photovoltaic system (PVs) can be used to accelerate “off-grid” rural electrification (targeting the poor) as well as to facilitate rural development, reduce GHGs emission and improve energy access in Nigeria. In this plan, we will deliberately promote the generation, dissemination and use of renewable energy resources in form of solar, biomass, geothermal, wind, and hydro in order to increase energy access, reduce energy poverty, reduce greenhouse gases (GHGs) emission, thereby attaining the Sustainable Development Goals (especially Goals 4, 7, 9, 12, 13) for Nigeria.

2. Climate Action

SDG 13 requires that every country takes action to combat climate change and its impacts. It is still possible, with political will and technological measures, to limit the increase in global mean temperature to two degrees Celsius above pre-industrial levels and thus avoid the worst effects of climate change.

3. Research Support Services (Data Bank)

In order to address the age long data gap in the RE&EE space, the REEEA-Alliance seeks to build consensus and synergy on RE&EE indicators. Under the Research Support Services (RSS), we will seek to create a credible statistical data on RE&EE in Nigeria. We will also collaborate and partner with national and international statistical agencies and other relevant stakeholders we have identified as key to resolving the data gaps in Nigeria and beyond.
